Perennial Sow Thistle

sow thistlePerennial sow thistle is an aggressive noxious weed native to Europe and Asia that spreads by both seed and creeping rhizomes.  It may closely resemble native lettuces or annual sow thistle, but these plants do not share its extensive root system.  It is important to control new infestations before the plant has a chance to develop its creeping root system.

Control Options:

  • Control of established stands is difficult.  A combination of cultivation and herbicide application works well.
  • This weed is not palatable to livestock, so it cannot be controlled by grazing.
  • Multiple mowing operations will help reduce seed-set and exhaust root reserves.
  • First year seedlings can be pulled by hand easily.
