Roadside Mowing

The County employs two mower operators each summer to mow County road rights-of-way, as well as any other areas that require mowing. Additionally, the County has a contract mower that conducts a 15-foot shoulder mow on all County road rights-of-way. Ratepayers are asked to please slow down when passing roadside mowers to help prevent damage to the machines and worker injuries.

Roadside Spraying

All weed inspectors conduct spot spraying of weeds throughout the summer. If a landowner has an isolated patch of noxious weeds on their property that they would like sprayed, they may contact their area weed inspector and sign a Spray Agreement. These agreements are at the discretion of the weed inspector and Manager of Rural Development. If a landowner does not wish any spraying to occur in the road right-of-way adjacent to their property, they may come into the County office and sign a No Spray Agreement. By signing a No Spray Agreement, the landowner takes responsibility for weed and brush control within the designated road right-of-way through mowing or other approved means. In conjunction with the rotational brushing program, the County also has a contract sprayer who applies a residual herbicide to all road rights-of-way that were brushed the previous year. In 2009, the contract will cover all local roads in the Woking - Westmark - Northmark area.

Roadside Brushing

Excessive brush in County ditches causes many problems, including flooding, ditch instability, excessive snow drifting, and safety hazards due to obscuring wildlife and deadfall onto County roads. The ASB’s goal is to maintain brush-free, grassed County road rights-of-way.

The County has just completed a rotational brushing program that brushed all County road rights-of-way over a four-year period. The Manager of Rural Development will now be monitoring County road rights-of-way for regrowth. If you find any County rights-of-way or intersections that are overgrown with brush, please report them to the Manager of Rural Development at 780-864-3760.
