Public Works Department
Department of Public Works is responsible for construction and maintenance
of Road, Bridge / Culvert, Drainage Ditch, Utilities, Waste management,
Agricultural services and Technical services.
For better monitoring of the road maintenance activity, the County has
installed the AVL tracking system on the mobile equipment. We
started GPS Survey for collecting data for all types of road features
like bridge / culvert approaches and road signs. The County has begun also
recording the various public works road maintenance projects in GIS.
The GPS data and the application software of the GIS information system
will be used for management and maintenance planning.
Engineering Construction
Saddle Hills County has established a four
year Road Network Improvement program for the reconstruction / upgrading
of local roads. Based on priorities approved by Council, the County
is budgeting more that $3 million annually for these projects. In addition,
the County reconstructs / maintains the Bridge / Culvert prioritize by
Alberta Infrastructure and Transportation (AIT) BIM system.
The County's Technical Services Coordinator works with representatives
of the resource industry to coordinate the development of this sector
within our community by ensuring municipal standards are met. These relate
to the development of pipeline crossings, access roads and approaches
and the movement of large equipment. Through the use of road
maintenance agreements the County works with industry to facilitate their important
activities while minimizing the impact on our infrastructure.
To assist in understanding municipal requirements for the use of local
roads by heavy equipment, Saddle Hills County has produced the Road
Use Guide. Please refer to this guide and/or contact the Technical Services
Coordinator for additional information.
Maintenance Services
The Public Works department is responsible for the maintenance of the more than 1800 km of road under the County's jurisdiction. In addition, the County maintains 14 designated drainage ditches to reduce the risk of flooding and the erosion of roads and land. To accomplish the year round maintenance activities, Saddle Hills County owns and operates nine graders and contracts the services of two private graders (for remote beats) as well. We also operate a fleet of five gravel trucks and gravel approximately 360 km of road per year at an annual cost of $700,000. In 2005 the County also crushed and stockpiled around 400000 tonnes of gravel. The County’s Mechanical Foreman works for the overall maintenance of all mobile equipment of the County to ensure efficient maintenance service.
Environmental Services
Saddle Hills County upgraded the water treatment plant and water reservoir
to supply standard drinking water for the resident's of the Hamlet of
Woking. The water Treatment plant is running less than 20% of its maximum
efficiency; i.e. the water treatment plant is able to handle future increased
demand.
As part of the Waste Management Program Saddle Hills County established
and maintaining seven garbage collection site putting 6 cubic yard
Bear proof bins and two transfer stations putting (from spring 2006) 50 cubic
yard bins through out the County. County residents dump their household
waste in these bins, which are emptied at a weekly basis and finally
dispose at the regional land fill station managed by HAZCO. Department
of Public Works is responsible for overall management of Environmental
services.
