Taxation Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about taxation.

When can I expect my combined assessment / taxation notice?

Assessment / taxation notices are mailed out in April and taxes are due and payable on October 15 of each year. The combined assessment / taxation notice covers the current calendar year from January 1 to December 31.

When will a late payment charge be applied?

If your tax payment is not received by October 15, a 12% penalty will be applied on your outstanding balance.

What happens if I plan to be away on the day my taxes are due?

If you are going to be away on October 15, Saddle Hills County Administrative Office will accept post-dated cheques for payment of taxes.  Tax payments may be made at most Financial Institutions, by online banking, mail or in person at the Saddle Hills County Office. Payments may also be placed in the night deposit box at the Saddle Hills County Office.

What will happen if I don't pay my taxes?

Collection procedures differ according to the type of tax account you have. If your tax account is for titled land, the following tax recovery process is outlined by the provincial government:

  • Any tax account for which there are tax arrears in excess of one year will have a tax notification (caveat) placed against the title by Saddle Hills County.
  • Should that tax account remain in arrears one year after the caveat is placed on the title, the property will be subject to tax sale.
  • If a property goes to tax sale, a reserve bid is set at that time, based on an appraisal of fair market value. No lower bid will be accepted at the sale. If a property is sold at the sale, the County transfers title to the new landowner. After payment of all outstanding taxes, liens and charges, the initial landowner can apply to the Court of Queen’s Bench to receive the excess funds. If the parcel does not sell, the title may transfer into the County's name.

If your property is a taxable lease, and your taxes are in arrears, a reminder letter will be mailed to you by February 28 of that year. If your taxes are unpaid by October 15 of that year, steps will be taken to have the lease cancelled.
