The Farm on Dead Horse Flats
The Farm on Dead Horse Flats is a quarter-section of land, approximately 150 acres, on one of the original Homesteads in Bonanza, AB. The owners, Michael & Shi, are first generation farmers, who migrated from Vancouver Island in 2022.
In the spring of 2024, they began to collect their herd, and the property became a functioning farm once again. What began with one bottle-fed steer, turned into a dozen cattle and a handful of pigs within a year.
The animals at Dead Horse Flats are raised without the use of hormones or antibiotics. They believe that the farm is a whole - animals, plants, people, the soil, and environment, all work as a finely tuned and interconnected system.
They are passionate about raising happy, healthy animals and treating them with the upmost care and respect. On the farm, grass-fed cattle live their best lives foraging in dense pasture, sheltered among the trees, while on the other side of the fence live the pigs. Scattered throughout the forest they rejuvenate the land through silvopasture practices - keeping invasive species in check, clearing underbrush to mitigate wildfire risk, and fertilizing as they go. The Farm on Dead Horse Flats is an ALUS program participant, focusing on environmental stewardship to create a multi-functional and resilient landscape that is flourishing with biodiversity.
Beef and pork sales will begin in 2027.
