Alberta Agriculture & Irrigation is investing $9M

Alberta Agriculture & Irrigation is investing $9M over three years for capital projects at local seed cooperatives to help modernize aging infrastructure. Seed processing facilities are local plants - often farmer-owned cooperatives that clean, grade and prepare seed and grain to meet regulatory and market standards. Seed coops support local economies, sustain rural jobs, and enable farmers to access nearby, trusted processing services, reducing transport costs and delays.

There are 66 facilities across the province, and in 2024 they cleaned 42.2 million bushels of seed and grain, representing about 16 million tonnes of crop production. The government plans to allocate $3 million annually beginning in 2026 through the 2028-29 fiscal year. These 66 include 10 in the Northwest: Beaverlodge, Fairview, Falher, La Crete, Manning, Peace River, Sexsmith, Spirit River, Valleyview and Worsley.
