Be Prepared: Extreme Heat

With temperatures remaining high in the Peace Region, it's a great time to ensure you are prepared for issues caused by extreme heat. Extreme heat affects everyone and can lead to illness or even death if precautions aren’t taken. It can also trigger other hazards such as wildfires and power outages

Remember these preparedness tips:

  • Know your risks. While everyone is vulnerable to extreme heat, some face higher risks, including older adults, children, those with pre-existing medical or mental health conditions, outdoor workers, and those who live alone.
  • Try home mitigation strategies to keep indoor temperatures down. Install curtains, window coverings, reflective film or heat control coverings for windows. Before bed, create a cross-breeze by opening windows and placing fans in front of them to pull hot air out and draw cool air in.
  • Gather supplies that will keep your household cool and hydrated, including water bottles, hydration packs, ice packs, portable fans, and spray bottles.

Understanding how extreme heat affects you, your loved ones, and your home is key to reducing stress and staying safe. Use Be Prepared programming and resources to learn how you can prepare for other hazards.
