Brush Pile Burning

As of March 1, wildfire season is officially underway, and residents are reminded that all outdoor burning now requires a valid fire permit.

Officials are urging those conducting brush pile burns to take extra precautions, particularly when revisiting winter burn sites. Fires can continue to smoulder underground for weeks or even months, posing a risk of reignition as temperatures rise and conditions become drier.

Residents returning to previously burned areas are advised to spread out remaining ashes and debris and carefully inspect the ground for lingering hot spots. Authorities recommend thoroughly dousing the site with water and stirring the ashes using heavy equipment or hand tools to ensure the fire is completely extinguished. The area should be confirmed cold to the touch before leaving.

Burn permits within the Forest Protection Area must be obtained through Alberta Forestry by calling 780-538-5560. For areas outside the Forest Protection Area, permits are available through the County office at 780-864-3760.

Officials also warn that failing to obtain a permit or not following permit conditions during wildfire season can result in a $600 fine under the Forest and Prairie Protection Act.

Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and practice safe burning to help prevent wildfires throughout the season.
