Safe Grain Bin Training Video

SARDA Ag Research is bringing the BeGrainSafe Trailer to the region on March 19-20. Did you know that it takes less than 15 seconds for a person to be trapped in grain? Grain entrapment is a real, fatal danger to producers in the area. This trailer from the Canadian Agricultural Safety Society will act as a mobile classroom for firefighters from around the region to demonstrate and practice grain rescue training. This is critical training that can save lives.

Marcel Maure, Fire Chief of the Smoky River Fire Department, is very enthusiastic about this training for the region.  According to him “being prepared for every type of emergency, especially within a farming community, is the best thing the department can do”.

There are so many producers upgrading their grain bins, which comes with significant risks, including maintaining the stored grain in good condition.  When producers are dealing with crusting or pooling along the sides due to poor grain conditions, they are at high risk of entrapment when they go in to resolve the issue. At this point, self-rescue is not an option, resulting in many accidents. Producers must know how to avoid entrapment incidents while fire fighters need to know how to respond to grain entrapment incidents without doing more harm to the victim.

Chief Maure will have firefighters from the entire Peace Region working with trainers during the sessions. Training includes virtual modules followed by hands-on learning for first responders in the trailer.  In addition, producers and industry representatives will have the opportunity to ask questions and view demonstrations.
