Targeting Weeds on Oil and Gas Sites

The Alberta Government recognizes the importance of protecting agricultural land, and is taking action to address weed issues on oil and gas sites.

The new Oil and Gas Conservation Regulation that took effect on May 1, 2026, supports the enforcement of weed and pest control issues.

The regulation defines “reasonable care and measures” to include compliance with energy resource enactments, specified enactments, the Weed Control Act and the Agricultural Pests Act, which allows the AER to issue orders under the Oil and Gas Conservation Act to take reasonable care and measures and take enforcement actions as necessary.

After six months, Alberta’s government will review the weed control process and make adjustments, as necessary.
