Unlike toilet paper, wipes are designed to stay strong when wet. That means they do not break down quickly after being flushed. As they move through the sewer system, they can catch on pipes, wrap around pump components, and collect other materials along the way.

Over time, these blockages can restrict wastewater flow, damage equipment, increase maintenance needs, and lead to costly repairs or sewer backups.

Products labelled “flushable” can still create problems in municipal wastewater systems. Baby wipes, cleaning wipes, personal hygiene wipes, paper towels, facial tissues, feminine hygiene products, cotton swabs, and dental floss should always be placed in the garbage.

The safest rule is simple: Only flush human waste and toilet paper.
