Think Before you Flush
Not everything belongs in the toilet. Flushing the wrong items can clog pipes, damage pumps, disrupt wastewater systems, and lead to costly repairs.
Even products labelled “flushable” may not break down quickly enough to move safely through sewer pipes and wastewater equipment. Items such as wipes, feminine hygiene products, paper towels, cotton swabs, dental floss, grease, medications, and household chemicals should never be flushed.
Unlike toilet paper, many of these products remain intact after flushing. They can collect inside pipes, become tangled in pumps, and combine with grease and other debris to create serious blockages. These problems can result in service disruptions, equipment damage, sewer backups, and increased maintenance costs.
To help protect Saddle Hills County’s wastewater infrastructure, toilets should only be used for human waste and toilet paper. Wipes and hygiene products belong in the garbage, medications should be returned to a pharmacy for safe disposal, and fats, oils, and grease should be allowed to cool and placed in the garbage.
Small changes in everyday habits can make a significant difference. Before flushing, take a moment to think about where the item will go and whether it could damage the system.
Think before you flush and help keep the wastewater system flowing safely and efficiently.
