Be Prepared: Poor Air Quality

Wildfire smoke affects everyone’s health, especially older adults, children, and pets. If you live in or are traveling to an area with an air quality advisory, it’s important to #BePrepared:

  • Learn about the Air Quality Heath Index (AQHI) and the actions you can take to stay safe at different levels of risk.
  • Get informed by downloading the WeatherCan app for advisories in your chosen locations and stay informed with the AQHI map.
  • Limit outdoor activities as much as possible - pets too! Wipe or brush your pets once they’re inside to remove smoke and particles that could cling to their fur.
  • Reduce poor air quality indoors by turning off appliances that exchange inside air with outside air.
  • If possible, use personal protective equipment (PPE) while outside. Consider PPE such as a high-quality medical mask (ASTM-certified), N95, KN95 or P100.

The Be Prepared Program offers free programming and resources to help individuals, households and communities prepare before, during and after an emergency.
