Be Prepared: Summer Storms

Thunderstorms, lightning, heavy rain, and hail can develop quickly and threaten life and property. Taking a few simple steps now can help keep you and your loved ones safe when severe storms occur.

#BePrepared by:

  • Knowing the risks: Severe storms can lead to other hazards, including tornadoes, extreme winds and power outages.
  • Gathering supplies: Stock up on essentials like power banks, batteries, no-cook meals, bottled or stored water, flashlights and other items you may need if sheltering in place. Prepare enough supplies to last a minimum of 72 hours.
  • Getting informed: Follow local news and weather reports for up-to-date information on weather conditions, warnings and storm maps. Find out where your community shares trusted updates during emergencies.
  • Protecting your property: Check the drainage around your property and take steps to prevent basement flooding. Secure outdoor items that could become dangerous projectiles in high winds.

The Be Prepared Program offers free programming and resources to help individuals, households and communities prepare before, during and after an emergency.
