Driving Growth in Northern Alberta
The Northern Alberta Development Council (NADC) has presented a new report aimed at accelerating social and economic development across northern Alberta. For over 60 years, the NADC has played a vital role in strengthening the region and contributing to the broader provincial economy. Alberta’s prosperity is deeply tied to the work being done in its northern communities, whether through resource development or economic diversification.
The newly submitted Northern Development Report outlines fresh opportunities to boost growth in the region and reinforce its status as a key economic engine for both Alberta and Canada.
To inform the report, the NADC consulted a wide range of stakeholders, including municipalities, chambers of commerce, First Nations and Métis communities, economic development agencies, small businesses, post-secondary institutions, and business organizations. These discussions focused on sectors such as natural resources, agriculture, tourism, recreation, and the emerging potential of nuclear energy. The process also highlighted regional challenges and led to several strategic recommendations, all of which the Government of Alberta has accepted in principle.
Key Recommendations Include:
-
Redefining Northern Alberta’s Boundaries: Update the official boundaries of the NADC region to better reflect the realities and characteristics of today’s northern communities.
-
Growing the Workforce: Expand marketing and advocacy efforts to attract skilled workers and investment. Increase access to high-quality education and training, with a special focus on opportunities for Indigenous youth and learners.
-
Promoting Northern Recognition and Investment: Develop a comprehensive strategy to advance development in the north and raise awareness of its value to the province.
-
Strengthening Infrastructure and Connectivity: Invest in economic corridors, transportation networks, utilities, and digital connectivity. Address affordability issues, including the high costs of electricity distribution and transmission.
As part of Budget 2025, the Alberta government committed nearly $5 billion toward supporting northern communities. This investment will help advance economic development, education, healthcare, transportation, and more, ensuring that northern Alberta continues to thrive and power the province’s future.
