Funding Boosts Alberta Greenhouses

Saddle Hills County is home to a number of greenhouse operations that play an important role in supporting local food production, and strengthening the regional economy. Programs that invest in greenhouse and vertical farming help ensure residents continue to have access to fresh, locally grown food year-round.

The Government of Alberta is accepting applications for the Growing Greenhouses Program, a funding initiative aimed at strengthening year-round, locally grown food production across the province.

The program supports the construction of new greenhouses and vertical farms, as well as improvements that increase productivity at existing commercial operations. By accelerating growth in Alberta’s controlled environment agriculture (CEA) sector, the program is intended to enhance food security and expand the availability of locally produced food throughout the year.

Eligible projects may receive cost-shared funding, with 50 per cent provided as a grant and 50 per cent contributed by the applicant. Funding is provided on a reimbursement basis and is subject to approval of eligible expenses by the Minister. Applications will be accepted until all available funding has been allocated.

To qualify, applicants must currently own and operate — or plan to own and operate — a greenhouse or vertical farm in Alberta as part of the proposed project. Applicants must also be Alberta residents or Alberta-registered corporations, partnerships, or co-operatives.
