Maskwa Medical Center Groundbreaking
Saddle Hills County Council was delighted to be part of the groundbreaking for the new Maskwa Medical Center, in Grande Prairie, on May 20, 2025.
The event took place at the future home of the center, located next to the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital and was attended by representatives from the Maskwa Medical Center Board, including Chairman Ken Drysdale, as well as local municipal representatives and partners.
"It is an honour to be here today on behalf of Saddle Hills County, to participate in this momentous occasion. To be here for the groundbreaking of this facility, after such a relatively short period of time, is a testament to not just the extraordinary efforts of the team behind the project, but to the strength of our collective community. Our commitment to this shared goal has allowed us to make this vision a reality.
We have all experienced the long wait times and delays associated with seeking medical care in our region, with many of us travelling long distances to receive urgent and much needed care. Once complete, this facility will not only provide better, local access to medical specialists and treatments for northwest Alberta residents, but also create jobs and opportunities that will allow us to continue to prosper and grow for many years to come.
I would also like to take a moment to thank our fellow municipal partners for their generous contributions to this project. Municipal support is vital in ensuring not just the necessary funds for large scale projects, but by providing our backing we are helping to amplify the voice of those who are advocating for these services in our region.
Saddle Hills County is proud to be a part of this project and we hope, that with our contribution, this facility may not only continue to serve this region well into the future but also act as a stepping stone, showing others what we are capable of if we work together." - Reeve Kristen Smith
Once complete, the facility will include an Academic Teaching Clinic, retail space, and medical specialist clinic that aims to provide treatment plans within 10 days of referrals. In addition, the 22,000 sq. ft. teaching space will train 20 resident physicians onsite, graduating 10 per year, thanks to a partnership with the University of Alberta's Faculty of Family Medicine.
Saddle Hills County committed $3,500,000 in funding to the project, included in the 2025 Final Capital Budget.
