Motorcycle Safety: Make Sure Everyone Gets Home Safe this Summer

With summer in full swing and motorcycles more prominent on our roads, it’s important for all road users to stay alert and share the road responsibility to ensure everyone gets home safe.

Unfortunately, about one-third of collisions involving a motorcycle result in death or injury, in comparison to approximately 1 in 10 for all motor vehicle collisions. When motorcycles crash, their riders lack the protection of an enclosed vehicle, and can suffer serious injury or be killed.

When driving, please remember to be aware of motorcyclists and give them the space they need. Be cautious when driving near, as motorcycles are less stable and visible than cars.

Motorcyclists can improve their own safety by:

  • riding defensively and avoiding blind spots.
  • obtaining proper training.
  • starting on a smaller bike if new, and moving up to bigger bikes as they gain more experience.
  • focusing on riding and nothing else.
  • wearing the right gear, including a certified helmet, leathers, closed shoes, and eye protection.

Between 2018 and 2022, 137 motorcyclists died and 1,091 were injured on Alberta's roads. Stay safe, be aware, and ensure we all get home safe this summer.
