Rangeland Sustainability Grant Program

The Rangeland Sustainability Program (RSP) provides grant funding to organizations for projects to conserve and promote the long-term sustainability of Alberta's rangelands.

Alberta's rangelands provide many things that benefit all Albertans, such as clean air, fresh water, food, timber, wildlife habitat, biodiversity, soil stabilization, pollination, buffering from extreme weather events, and carbon sequestration and storage, as well as providing a sustainable and renewable source of livestock forage.

The RSP provides funding for projects that:

  • remove barriers to successful stewardship so that rangeland managers can support economic, social, and environmental outcomes on rangelands.
  • support research programs that increase knowledge and understanding of rangeland management to achieve long-term sustainability outcomes.
  • support education initiatives and tool development that allows Albertans to implement rangeland sustainability and stewardship.

Project examples include:

  • applied research demonstrating adaptive range management practices.
  • carbon sequestration research, extension, and best management practices for rangelands.
  • climate change effects and adaptation on rangelands.
  • ecological restoration of native grasslands in areas of forest or brush encroachment.
  • enhancement of existing tools, development of new tools, practices, or strategies for rangeland sustainability.
  • grazing and timber integration.
  • livestock producer education and extension.
  • multiple use mitigation best practices on rangelands.
  • predation and cattle loss.
  • protection of species at risk.
  • rangeland management and ecosystem services.
  • rangeland reclamation and restoration research and training.
  • rangeland wildfire resilience.
  • recreation and rangeland interactions.
  • riparian monitoring and management.
  • wildlife, livestock, and rangeland interactions.

Eligible project costs, include those related to advertising and outreach efforts, materials and supplies for implementation, project staff, and office and travel expenses. It should be noted that only the time and expenses that directly relate the project are eligible, and general overhead costs are not included.

The program is not open to individual Albertans, but individuals may collaborate with eligible organizations to develop projects. Eligible organizations include educational institutions, indigenous communities and organizations, municipalities, non-government organizations, and non-profit organizations.

The deadline for applications, is September 17, 2025.
