Road Construction, Drainage, and Approach Permits

Residents and landowners looking to construct roads and approaches, carry out ditching, brushing, fencing, or small upgrades on undeveloped road allowances, or undertake any work on County roads are required to obtain certain permissions before doing so.

If you are looking to build a new approach to your property from a developed County road, you will need to complete and submit an Approach Permit Application, as outlined in Policy PW20. With the exception of industrial approaches, Saddle Hills County will provide one approach per quarter section on developed County roads and an additional approach per quarter section where a natural obstruction such as a waterway or ravine prohibits access to a portion of the quarter. This is provided at no cost to the landowner. Landowners may request changes to the approach or construct their own approach, under certain conditions.

For those looking to upgrade or construct a new road, you will need to complete a Road Construction Request, as outlined in Policy PW25. Saddle Hills County reviews all Road Construction Requests on a case-by-case basis.

Ditching, brushing, small upgrades, fencing, and gates constructed on undeveloped surveyed road allowances require a Work in Undeveloped Surveyed Right of Ways Permit, as outlined in Policy PW33. Permits are valid for one year from the approval date. Certain conditions to prevent the spread of noxious weeds, re-seed disturbed areas, and gain consent from governing bodies and landowners will also be included in the permit.

Saddle Hills County endeavours to help all residents with drainage concerns while adhering to Environmental Regulations, as outlines in Policy PW32. If you have a drainage or culvert issue or would like to request drainage improvements, please Report an Issue and a member of staff will be in touch. Please note that a permit is needed to complete any ditching work in County Rights-of-Way.
